Obtaining Services

Hawthorn Children’s Psychiatric Hospital provides Inpatient Acute treatment services to children and adolescents from across Missouri. Admissions to the facility occur in collaboration with the consumer’s local Department of Mental Health (DMH) Community Mental Health Center and the consumer’s legal guardian. When a child or adolescent is believed to be in need of Inpatient Psychiatric Treatment, the child/adolescent’s local Community Mental Health Center is contacted to provide same-day crisis assessment and possible referral to Hawthorn’s Inpatient Program. Hawthorn admits consumers to the Inpatient Program based on the recommendations of the Community Mental Health Center’s face-to-face assessment of the child/adolescent in crisis. Referrals to Hawthorn’s Residential Treatment Program occur through a variety of referral sources, including the Community Mental Health Centers, Children’s Division, Division of Youth Services, Family Court, and private community partners.

Hawthorn schedules all admissions to both the Inpatient and Residential Programs during regular business hours, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday-Friday. During weekends, holidays, and weekdays after these hours, families requesting Inpatient Hospitalization should contact Behavioral Health Response for crisis assessment and response. The Residential Program does not accept emergency admissions.

To request Inpatient or Residential Treatment Services, please contact the Intake Services Department during regular business hours (8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday-Friday).
