Our Residency Program

Fulton State Hospital (FSH) sponsors an ASHP-accredited, exciting, challenging, and varied PGY-2 Psychiatric Residency Program. Our residency program offers a variety of clinical opportunities that will supplement your current training, provide a solid foundation for work in a variety of settings, and the opportunity to develop specialized skills. Much of the training for the 2025-2026 resident will take place at a new state-of-the-art High Security facility.

We provide services to a challenging and diverse population with complex psychopathology. Our residency program provides an atmosphere for residents to enhance personal and professional growth through a series of clinical learning experiences, didactic offerings, and opportunities for participation in special projects.

The Residency is a 1-year program from July 1 through June 30. The resident will spend extensive time participating in multidisciplinary treatment teams, providing patient medication education groups, and academic teaching to psychiatry residents, nurse practitioners, psychology interns, physician assistant students, and medical & pharmacy students. Throughout the residency year, the resident will also serve on the following committees/panels: Trauma Specific Therapy Consultation Team, State Psychopharmacology Panel, Incompetent to Stand Trial (IST) Psychopharmacology Panel, IST Committee, Research Committee, and P&T Committee. Details are available by visiting the Committees and Panels page.

Additionally, there will be an opportunity for the resident to have a longitudinal learning experience that provides the necessary skills to implement a pharmacy-managed laboratory that performs hematology monitoring for clozapine treated patients. This experience focuses on the clinical and operational aspects of managing a clozapine laboratory and clinic. Upon successful completion, the resident will have fulfilled the necessary requirements to serve as a Director of a moderate complexity laboratory. More information is available on our Clozapine Laboratory page.

Applications are due by January 3, 2025. Candidates must submit their application through PhORCAS. More information about the application process is available on our Eligibility and Application page.

For longitudinal learning experiences, residents receive training in innovative, evidenced-based treatment and best practices within nationally recognized treatment programs targeting specific populations. Details are available by clicking on the Learning Experiences link to the right.

The FSH PGY-2 Psychiatric Residency Program is dedicated to a multimodal education approach. Our thorough didactic curriculum complements the clinical experiences that create the foundation of our training. Residents will find that this program prepares them for practice and passing the Board Certified Psychiatric Pharmacy (BCPP) examination. Residents will facilitate weekly pharmacist and nurse practitioner study groups that cover the CPNP Psychiatric Pharmacotherapy Review Book for preparation of the BCPP examination. Preceptors will also provide weekly topic discussions from the Psychiatric Pharmacotherapy Review Book as well as additional topics. Also, residents will have the opportunity to participate in a weekly psychology seminar series throughout the year covering a wide range of clinically relevant topics. For more detailed information click on the Didactic Experiences link to your right.

FSH also has a unique opportunity for residents to participate in ongoing research opportunities through a multidisciplinary Research Committee. The resident will attend this weekly committee with their primary pharmacy preceptor throughout their residency, except during offsite learning experiences. The committee is charged with teaching, assisting, and conducting research projects at FSH and/or collaboratively with other DMH facilities. A project that the resident is passionate about will be identified, monitored, and managed through the Research Committee. Also, additional opportunities will be provided for residents that are interested in publishing case reports and review articles. On average, residents have published two additional articles, not including their residency project. For more detailed information click on the Research Experiences link to your right.
