Our Internship and COVID-19

Fulton State Hospital (FSH) sponsors an APA-accredited, exciting, challenging, and varied doctoral psychology internship. Our Internship offers a variety of clinical opportunities that will supplement your current training, provide a solid foundation for work in a variety of settings, and the opportunity to develop specialized skills. Much of the training for the 2020-2021 interns took place at our new state-of-the-art High Security facility.

We provide services to a challenging and diverse population with complex psychopathology. Our internship provides an atmosphere for interns to enhance personal and professional growth through a series of clinical rotations, didactic offerings, and opportunities for participation in special projects.

The Internship year runs from August 1 through July 31. We offer two internship slots (program code 178311). Each program is organized into two, six-month major rotations and two, year-long minor rotations. Details are available by clicking on the links to the right, or by downloading our brochure.

Applications for both of these tracks are due by November 1 (or next business day). We require that applicants submit a completed APPI. All applicants will be considered by both tracks, to assess goodness of fit. More information about the application process is available on our Eligibility and Application page.

In our program interns receive training in innovative, evidenced-based treatment and best practices within nationally recognized treatment programs targeting specific populations. We also offer the opportunity for interns to complete a Forensic Evaluation rotation with our certified forensic examiners.

  • Severe mood & behavioral dysregulation (New Outlook Program for Behavior and Mood Self-Management),
  • Moderate & long-term mental disorders with resultant symptoms & behavior challenges (Recovery & Self-Motivation),
  • Sexually Violent Predators (Sex Offender Rehabilitation & Treatment Services)
  • Serious mental illnesses resulting in significant functional impairment (Social Learning Program).
  • Evaluations for Competency stand trial and Mental State (Competency Restoration/Forensic Evaluation)

Interns will complete minor rotations in both Program Evaluation and Psychological Assessment. During the Program Evaluation minor interns will receive real-world experiences in ongoing program improvement processes throughout the hospital to enhance treatment. Many of these investigations, which interns have participated in, have been presented at professional conferences and published in refereed journals (see Scholarly Contributions). For the Psychological Assessment minor the interns will gain experience completing various types of psychological assessments

Throughout the year interns will also participate in a weekly seminar series covering a wide range of clinically relevant topics.
