The Foundation for the Advancement of the Fulton State Hospital is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization which was created to enhance opportunities, through community involvement, to benefit the those receiving treatment and staff of Fulton State Hospital, by offering training and services which cannot be supplied by the State of Missouri's budgetary programs. Fulton State Hospital is the only state hospital in Missouri which did not have such a foundation.
Goals and Projects of the Foundation
- To provide assistance to families receiving treatment who could not otherwise afford to visit
- Provide lodging for these families
- To plan fund-raising activities and special programs for specific projects and needs
- Provide Hospital staff with $500 Quarterly Scholarships to advance their education and help support professional development
- Establish Annual Bluegrass & BBQ festival to raise funds and to familiarize others with the Hospital and what the Foundation has to offer
- Facilitate overnight accommodations at local motels for the families of individuals at Christmas time and throughout the year to help keep the family united and supporting their loved one
- Provide travel assistance for family members to visit during Family Day and another significant milestone achievements
- Offer $1,000 Recruit-an-RN Referral Bonus and Recruit-a-Social Worker to help staff the Hospital with qualified individuals
- Provide reimbursement for current, full-time RN’s who complete and pass the Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing Board Certificate to help them in the area of working with mental health

- Volunteering to serve on the Board or a sub-committee
- Inviting members of the Board to speak to your organization about the foundation
- Making charitable tax deductible gifts to The Foundation for the Advancement of Fulton State Hospital
- Volunteering to assist with a fundraiser
- Remembering the Foundation in your estate planning
- Participating in the Annual Bluegrass and BBQ Festival that is held on the 2nd Sunday of September each year
- Help fight the stigmas of mental health by recognizing someone's identity outside of their illness. Be conscious of your language and share positive messages about mental health. Educate yourself and others and show compassion for those with mental illness.
- Donate or solicit raffle items or attendance prizes
- Attend a monthly Board meeting to see how you can get involved
Bluegrass & BBQ 2024
Mark your calendars now for the 18th Annual Bluegrass & BBQ Festival. The event will be held on Sunday, September 8th from noon until 5 pm at Fulton State Hospital, 600 East 5th Street, Fulton, MO. We will have 4 bands this year – BBQ and Homemade pies will be for sale by the First Christian Church. The cost is $10 per person – 16 and under are free with their parents.
